History reveals that ‘The Fountain Inn’ was once known as one of “a curious group of buildings” on Regent Street, which depicted different aspects of Victorian life. Other premises in the group were a workhouse, a police station and a church. ‘The Fountain Inn’ is shown on a number of Victorian contemporary drawings as representing pleasure. Next to ‘The Fountain Inn’ lay the ‘Spinning House’ workhouse for women (now Mandela House), which was seen as depicting morality. The council building adjacent to Mandela House was previously the city police station thus representing law and order. Finally lies the Baptist church, which illustrates religion. Today only The Fountain Inn and the Baptist church fulfil their original purposes!
The Fountain Inn was taken over by The Knight Pub Company in August 2005; now in our 5th year of trading the business continues to go from strength to strength. The company has for the last two years been entered into the Young Business Leaders editions of Who’s Who of Britain Business Elite, putting the Knight Pub Company in the top 2% of companies with directors under 35 in the country. We pride ourselves in giving great service, and being a warm and inviting place to come anytime day or night. The kitchen is managed by Joseph Crowe, a former 2AA rosette holder, who offers a selection of healthy and reasonably priced bar snacks and pies in the downstairs bar, and a more exclusive Al a carte menu in our first floor dining room. Our drinks range consists of great local ales, continental beers, premium wines, spirits and an exclusive cocktail list, with in-house favorites such as the Fireball, Dr. Pepper and Bison’s Apple.
We are currently planning a major refurbishment of The Fountain Inn, this was granted planning permission mid 2008, and construction was scheduled to start early in 2010, however we have decided to delay until a later date, as we will be forced to close down for a period of up to 20 weeks to complete the works. When the project does go ahead expect to see dramatic change, the building will be re-invented, so that every inch of space is utilised, with the introduction of a small, but exclusive hotel on the upper floors, a first floor roof terrace, bar and dining area, as well as a complete revamp of the bar on the ground floor.
We will keep everyone up to date with details of this exciting project through our Newsletters.
